A heart touching story

The parcel was very big. We all wondered what it could contain. My mom decided to wait till the next day before she unwrapped the parcel, because according to our tradition if anyone delivers a package that is wrapped to you, you need to wait for the next day before you do open it. Since my father left, that is about three years ago, I have been sleeping with my mother in the same room my dad used to sleep with her.

That night, my mom woke up whiles she thought I was asleep. Though it was very dark in the room but I heard her sobbing silently. She was crying and murmuring along. “this is all the doings of the enemy poverty. If life was good for us my husband wouldn’t have left. His last born does not know him. Oh God! Wherever my husband is, please try and bring him back”. The sobbing became so loud that I pretended to be disturbed so I woke up. I asked her what the problem was but she told me it was only a dream. We all went back to sleep.

On the next day, my mom called all my five siblings together including me. Our last born was only two and a half years so he was still in bed. We the six siblings gathered in front of mom who told us that, it is time for us to know whatever the parcel contains. So, she started unwrapping it, and finally, she was able to expose everything in the parcel. There were linen clothes and our names were boldly written on each of them. My mom took the three clothes since we were seven.

There was also a cassette in the parcel. my mother brought an old tape my father loved listening to music with and inserted the cassette. We all thought perhaps it one of the loved songs of my father he wanted us to remember him with, but to our amazement, we heard the voice of our father. These were his words

“Hello my dear wife, I have missed you a lot. It was never my wish to stay that far away from you. You know am doing this because of you and the children. Don’t worry, I will be with you soon. There are ten clothes in the parcel, one for each of the children and the remaining for you and my last born I was not able to see his or her face. My children, I have been thinking each day about you.

I sometimes feel bad for leaving my children behind in another man’s country. I am doing all this for you. I will be with you soon. There is a sum of 500,000 naira in the parcel. It’s all for you and your mom. I will be with you this coming Christmas; I love you all”.

As soon as the voice ended, I bowed my head and tears began to flow down my cheeks. As for my little brothers, they were happily cheering up for getting new clothes. I turned and to my surprise, my mom wasn’t able to control her tears but she managed to hide it from my brothers. I once again got new hope when my father said he will return to see us this coming Christmas which was only five months away.

Once again, days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and months into years but my father had yet not returned. This time around, no parcel nor recording from anyone had arrived. It was now six years since my father went to Nigeria but had still not returned. I and my mom became very suspicious and decided to take a step.
